When we intake a new Shiba into our program the dog is not posted until the Vet exam and socialization skill assessment. We may have applicants waiting for the right match so the dog still may not be posted.
For immediate consideration complete an adoption questionaire. When Shibas are available they are posted at, http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/OR106.html

I am good friends with many breeders and have learned a great deal of knowledge from them. I interviewed three outstanding breeders this month, and asked them a series of questions for our readers. I feel that we all could be better prepared. What these breeders have in common are high standards, visits welcome, participate in rescue, and have a huge passion for the breed that doesn't stop at the time of purchase. If you must have a puppy I highly recommend our breeders and they are listed at the National Shiba Club of America with AKC breeder of merit.
Please read more about the importance of reputable breeders in our 2011 newsletter.

1. If people see a listing for registered AKC puppies, what are the requirements for AKC registered puppies and what does it mean?
Answer: All my puppies are AKC and this should tell them that they are sure of the background of the puppy they get. All my PETS are to be spayed or neutered.
2. If someone is interested in buying from you what information and fees do you provide before shipping (if you ship)?
Answer: I have a web site I always tell them to look at, it has my contract and what I expect. I tell them everything about how long I have been in the breed, how many I have and how they live. IF I ship the puppy needs to be paid for first along with the cost of shipping, crate and health certificate.
3. What do you require to know about the person purchasing a dog from you?
Answer: Everything. Pictures of their yard (if I am shipping), how much they know, and they MUST have a fenced yard if they own a home. If they live in a Apartment I am ok with it if someone is home all day.
4. What kind of health screening should a buyer expect at the bare minimal?
Answer: What the parent club requires, Hips, Eyes and Patella's.
5. Do you expect follow-up and how would you track the dogs?
Answer: YES! I want to know that same day if the first trip home went alright. I require several days of letting me know how it is going (this way they are not left to their own devices), and I do not have that many puppies so I keep the e-mails of those who have them.

1. If people a listing for registered AKC puppies what are the requirements for AKC registered puppies and what does it mean?
Answer: The requirements are that both parents are registered with AKC, that the breeder is in good standing with AKC. The breeder has not been suspended for some reason and that the breeder has processed an application to register the litter with AKC
2. If someone is interested in buying from you what information and fees do you provide before shipping (if you ship)?
Answer: I find it very hard to ship now due to Airlines being unreliability. If the buyer has already satisfied my requirements to purchase a puppy and shipping is necessary, I would ask for the following information: Where the nearest major airport that would have a direct or non-stop flight. New owner would pay for the shipping cost, crate, health certificate. I provide a clean, well socialized, micro chipped puppy that is 10 to 12 weeks old, crate trained, transportation to the airport providing the best flight. I ask the new owner to please send me an something (such as a small blanket that everyone in the house hold (pet too) has put their scent on). The new owner is given a list of things to have when puppy arrives (in case a clean up). When the puppy arrives, the new owners are to call me as soon a possible to let me know that their puppy is safe and with them.
3. What do you require to know about the person purchasing a dog from you?
Answer: How did they get interested in the Shiba as a breed. Have they owned a Shiba or know one? What made them choose a Shiba? That they do know that the Shiba is NOT an off leash dog!? Do they want a companion only or will they be showing or breeding their Shiba? I ask them to tell me about there family and any other pets they may have. If adults work outside the home what arrangements they have made for the puppy when they are not at home? Do they have a fenced yard and if not will they be walking the puppy often? I do expect them to take the puppy to training classes. Does their Veterinarian know Shibas as a breed? That I will in every way possible answer any question about the Shiba I can and that I want to know of any problems right away or brags about how smart their puppy is, always lots of pictures! They will sign a contract that outlines spay/neuter, training, socialization and refund/return policy. Personal references and a home visit, if possible. That once they have one of my puppies they are now part of my Shiba family!
4. What kind of health screening should a buyer expect at the bare minimal?
Answer: On the both parents, OFA: Hips (Good or Excellent), Patellas (Normal) & Heart (Normal). Eyes CERF Normal. The parents should not have any physical or emotional abnormalities that might reflect poorly on their offspring. On the puppy: my Veterinarian has given the puppy an exam. If said Veterinarian finds any problems with the puppy that will be disclosed to the new owner. The puppy will have any vaccinations appropriate to their age.
5. Do you expect follow-up and how would you track the dogs?
Answer: I would expect to hear from the new owner often so that I would be able to answer any questions they might have. I email often and expect to get lots of pictures, brags, questions and comments about their new puppy. If possible I like to see the puppy as it grow, so visits are always welcome!

1. If people see a listing for registered AKC puppies what are the requirements for AKC registered puppies and what does it mean?
Answer: The requirements are that the parents both be registered with AKC, that the breeder is currently in good standing with AKC (not suspended for some infraction) and that the breeder has processed an application to register the litter with AKC.
2. If someone is interested in buying from you what information and fees do you provide before shipping (if you ship)?
Answer: With the current unreliability of the Airlines, I prefer not to ship. If the buyer has already satisfied my requirements to purchase a puppy and shipping is necessary, I require the following information: Nearest major airport that would support a direct or non-stop flight and crate purchase by new owner. I provide a clean, well socialized, micro chipped pup that is at least 10 weeks old, the health certificate, crate training, transportation to the Airport providing the best flight and I wait with the pup until flight time. The new owner is given a list of supplies to have on hand when pup arrives (in case a clean up is necessary.) The AKC Registration papers are sent by mail and not attached to the crate. When the pup arrives, the new owners are to call me to let me know that their pup is safe in their hands. The pup is shipped either prepaid by new owner or collect.
3. What do you require to know about the person purchasing a dog from you?
Answer: Why they have chosen a Shiba, past experience with a Shiba (or other breed), what their family consists of, living conditions for their new pup, fenced yard, training classes planned, Veterinarian (does Vet know Shibas), future plans for Shiba (companion/show/breed/therapy/obedience/agility), an unwavering understanding that a Shiba is not an "off leash" dog, do they have someone knowledgeable in the breed close by to mentor them, they must sign a contract that outlines spay/neuter, training, socialization and refund/return policy if home is not compatible to a Shiba. I also request personal references and try for a home visit, if possible.
4. What kind of health screening should a buyer expect at the bare minimal?
Answer: On the parents, OFA: Hips (Good or Excellent), Patellas (Normal) & Heart (Normal). Eyes CERF Normal. The parents should not have any physical or emotional abnormalities that might reflect poorly on their offspring. On the pup, a Veterinarian exam covering the condition of the pup, inside and out, with notations of anything deviating from normal and its importance to the current and future health of the Shiba. The pup should have any vaccinations appropriate to their age.
5. Do you expect follow-up and how would you track the dogs?
Answer: The Breeder should be as important to the Puppy buyer as a good Veterinarian. I expect to hear questions from the new Owner when they have them. It is easier to prevent a problem than to correct it later. I call and e-mail often and expect to receive photos, brags, questions and comments about their Shiba.
Adoption policies:
Our adoptions are successful because we have a detailed process in place
which is dependent upon meeting the needs of both the owner and the dog. Not everyone
can adopt the dog they choose, due to specific needs that are in the best interest of
the dog, and will be honored appropriately. We are not looking for just a home... we are
looking for the best home! Failure to do this will result in unsuccessful placements and
may cause behaviour problems and an unhappy home for both the owner and dog. We match needs
perfectly, or we continue to search for the right home.
To begin the process, you must complete the following three steps.
- Complete an adoption form.
Once this is done, the form is forwarded on to us to review. We will then contact you via e-mail or phone to
discuss your application and family needs as soon as possible.
- If your application matches the needs of a Shiba you are interested in locally, we arrange a time for you
to meet him or her. Pictures don't tell the whole story, and we like for you to get to know their individual
personality a bit better.
- We will schedule a home visit to guarantee the safety of the Shiba and offer positive
suggestions to provide a good environment for your new family member. In addition, we may
ask for a reference from a friend, relative, or Veterinarian.
We work with families and shelters to complete adoptions. All rescue dogs are spayed or neutered before placement to prevent overpopulation, as well as health issues that could prevent you and your new best friend from sharing a long life. All adoptions include a contract of terms to meet.
All adoption fees include a starter kit with a collar, leash, premium dog food, and treats. We expect our Shiba kids to become part of your family, with love, patience, exercise, a premium diet, and proper Vet care - and will accept no less for them!
