Our National Shiba Inu Rescue Family:
There are many people out there who rescue and passionately save dog’s lives. However, there are also backyard/commercial breeders and hoarders who try and get their hands on dogs through rescue, shelters, and newspaper ads. Please work with a reputable organization for recommendations. We know these people and like us, we do assist outside our area when there is space and resources available to intake the Shiba.

Other Shiba Breeders :

When choosing a reputable breeder you are never guaranteed a close to perfect experience without visiting the site, looking into the breeder, and visiting a club website to research the requirements of breeding such as health testing, reduced litters, and dogs of sound temperament. AKC dogs are not just about the perfect look to represent the breed…it’s about breeding a sound temperament, standard size and appearance, and regulating the breeding standards. There are multiple registries out there such as ACA that do not mean a thing toward responsible breeding, and only records information about the dog and breeder. To make a point, I complained and had others complain about a breeder registered with ACA. After seven complaints, nothing was ever done and that is the reason that AKC rejected this breeder.

Social Networks

We actively participate in numerous social networks to spread the word about the importance of rescue support.

Watch for us soon to be on additional social networks such as Dogster and PDXdog!

Superior Diet Recommendations - We strongly believe that a superior natural diet will add years to your pet’s life, regardless of the breed. Preservatives, additives and chemicals are a major flaw in today’s market and rob us from living life to the fullest. We highly recommend PawsitivelyCatered! Jan Goetz is a Shiba owner and volunteer and we personally know her. She strives to improve the quality of life for our furry family members and has seen dramatic health improvements because of it!

Other recommendations include Wellness Chicken or White Fish formulas, Merrick Turducken or Grammy Pot Pie, Orijen Adult, and Karma Organic.

Lost Shiba - Our Shibas have snuck out the front door, under our legs and we chased them as far as we could and once they tired out they would come to us, within distance, probably 20 minutes later. They will run you into the ground with their new-found freedom! Someone always snags a cheese stick and we offer it as a reward for coming to us and winning the game! We don't punish them because they will not come to us again if we use negative discipline. Of course after that, we had a nice steel heavy screen door installed! BUT if you have a new Shiba or a foster dog then they won't know their surroundings and can travel far, trying to make it back to their last home. In this case you should do the following:

  1. Immediately post the information about the dog on the website of all shelters surrounding you. Check with them every few days.
  2. Make up posters with a good picture and post them everywhere (pet stores, street corners, parks, etc). I think we posted 100 posters before we were done.
  3. Place an ad in the newspaper listing a reward involved but never list a price because this encourages the greed in people to shine through!
  4. Form a search party and comb through each and every block every day. Do not give up because the dog is probably circling in the area and if so, you will get calls that may lead you to them.

Most dogs are eventually found with the diligence of their owner and this is why it's so very important to have updated license information and a micro-chipped dog!

Travel Websites - I have found wonderful properties to stay at with up to four dogs. Summertime, we travel with our "pack", and have found places to stay using these two websites. My gang just loves the beach, and we take them quite often!
